El ácido pelargonico es un ácido graso de 9 carbonos, herbicida, extremadamente rápido y no selectivo, actúa sobre los tejidos verdes. No es sistémico y no se transloca a través de los tejidos leñosos. Se mueve a través de la cutícula y las membranas celulares y reduce el pH interno de las células de la planta, reduciendo las reservas de ATP celular y Glucosa-6-fosfato, posteriormente se evidencia una disfunción de la membrana que finalmente conduce a la fuga de células, el colapso y la desecación del tejido. Puede ser utilizado como herbicida y como desecante. Como desecante se utiliza para la desecación de cultivos destinados a la producción de semilla o, simplemente, para facilitar la recolección.
